Old Ferry Landing has a reputation, for great food and great fun – and longevity. The seasonal (April to October) eatery opened in June 1975. Owner Jack Blalock’s father, Richard Blalock, had decided to do something with the building he had purchased as an investment. “I happened to be getting out of college, and my father asked if I could help him start this retirement business of his.” Jack Blalock put his plans for graduate and law school on hold. “I was only going to do it temporarily,” he says. “But I found that I enjoyed the business too much to leave.”
The eatery, located on an 1880 pier by the tugboats on the Piscataqua River, was the first establishment in Portsmouth to offer meals al fresco. “We were the original deck,” Blalock says. “When we opened, there was no outdoor dining in Portsmouth – no one thought about it.” They started with six tables. Over the years, Old Ferry Landing expanded, and now has outdoor seating for 70, plus another upper deck lounge with space for 35.
